S’pore international school sells places for $114,000

For Singapore expats who want to be sure their child gets one of the scarce places in the Tanglin Trust British school, here is one way to guarantee it: pay S$165,000 .
All the top international schools in Singapore have huge waiting lists, as Singapore’s sizzling economy has brought an influx of thousands of expats in sectors such as banking, oil and biotech.

The Tanglin Trust School, a non-profit school that caters to over 2,000 expat students aged 3 to 18, said in a statement on Friday that for S$165,000, an expat child is guaranteed a school seat in the August 2008 intake, while S$65,000 places the child on top of what the school calls “long waiting lists”.

Annual school fees at Tanglin are at around S$20,000 per year.

“Individuals and families face a potentially long wait for a place and companies looking to relocate employees here are finding families unwilling to commit to a move to Singapore without knowing their children’s education is secure,” the statement said.

When asked why the school charged such a high placement fee, Tanglin Chief Executive Officer Steven Andrews declined to comment.
